Producer Information
Champagne G. H. Mumm, based in Reims, is one of the largest producers in Champagne. The portfolio is centered around the zesty, refreshing Cordon Rouge Brut, which is based on the classic Champagne blend, along with a range of other styles including brut ros, demi-sec, vintage and blanc de blancs. The top wine is the Cuve R. Lalou, a limited release vintage Champagne made from selected grand cru parcels and named after Ren Lalou, a former head of the company. Champagne Mumm owns around 220 hectares (540 acres) of vines, with many in some of the top grand cru vineyards in Champagne. These holdings make up approximately 25 percent of Mumm’s production, with the remaining grapes coming from independent growers, with whom Mumm has long-standing relationships in order to help maintain a consistent style in the finished product. The Cordon Rouge is aged for two and a half years, with vintage wines spending nearly five years in bottle. These are aged in Mumm’s 25km (15 miles) of cellars, which are home to almost 25 million bottles of wine. P.A. Mumm Giesler was founded in Reims in 1827 by three winemaking Mumm brothers, along with two other investors, all from the Rhine Valley in Germany. The company was later renamed as G. H. Mumm et Cie, and released the first Cordon Rouge, with its iconic red sash, in 1876. Mumm has expanded beyond Champagne, opening Mumm Napa in the Napa Valley in 1983. For decades, principally in the latter half of the 20th Century, Mumm and its cordon rouge label had become associated with sporting feats. Before the era of sponsorship deals, a Mumm representative would be on hand with a bottle or more to hand to the winner of the likes of a yachting, cycling or motorcar race. In an oft-repeated public relations coup, the victor or victors would be snapped with bottles of Mumm in hand. In more recent years, the celebrations have become considerably more formalised although Mumm can sometimes still be seen on the podium.
