Producer Information
Aalto Bodegas y Vinedos is a Ribera del Duero estate known for its varietal red wines made from Tempranillo. Its top wine, PS, is released in small quantities and only in the best vintages. It is widely considered to be one of Spain’s best wines. Aalto has 110 hectares (270 acres) of contracted vineyards in Ribera del Duero, as well as 20ha (50 acres) of younger vines in Valladolid. The contracted vineyards have vines that are between 40-100 years old, and are grown on a complex variety of soils. The P.S. (Pagos Seleccionados) wine is selected from the very best plots, or pagos, within the vineyards. The modern winery at Quintanilla de Arriba, some 40km (25 miles) east of Valladolid, was completed for the 2005 vintage. It has gravity-flow systems for moving wine, a low-temperature room to cool harvested grapes before destemming, custom-designed tanks in wood, concrete and stainless steel, and underground barrel halls. The standard Aalto Ribera del Duero wine usually spends 20 months in oak, 50 percent of which is new French wood, with the remainder in older French and American barrels. PS is aged for 24 months in new French barrels. Fruit from different blocks of vines are kept separate through the winemaking process and final blends are made for both wines after ageing. In poor years, it is possible neither cuve will be released. Capitalising on Ribera del Duero’s recent establishment of a Crianza denomination for aged white wines, Aalto also produces Blanco de Parcelas a white wine made from Verdejo and aged in oak. Aalto was founded in 1999 by Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini. Both have excellent pedigrees: Zaccagnini was previously the president of the Ribera del Duero’s consejo regulador regional wine trade body, while Garcia was winemaker at the iconic Vega Sicilia for 30 years. He is one of the most experienced and respected winemakers in the world. The estate is named after the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto.
