        Producer Information

Pian dell’Orino is a leading Montalcino wine estate. Well-known for its reds from the Sangiovese grape, the estate has 22 different clones planted to the variety. The 6 hectare (15 acre) estate covers four different vineyards in Montalcino, located next to the famous vineyards of Biondi Santi. The chalk-rich soils have proved very well suited to the Sangiovese grapes that are grown here. Proprietors Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrick Erbach have farmed the estate organically and biodynamically for many years. Pian dell’Orino’s top wine, the Bassolino di Sopra, is sourced from the upper part of the Bassolino vineyard. This inaugural vintage was 2007, and since has only been produced in the best years. In 2006 and 2004, a Riserva without a vineyard designation was made instead. The standard Brunello di Montalcino wine called Vigneti del Versante from 2010 is sourced from the Bassolino and Cancello Rosso vineyards. It is aged for around 45 months in large oak vats. The lineup also includes a Rosso di Montalcino that spends a year in oak barriques, and the Piandorino, a varietal Sangiovese made under the Toscana IGT designation. This wine is made with fruit from the more fertile parts of the vineyards, and is regarded by the estate as a more obviously fruity wine than the classic Montalcino style. Pian dell’Orino gained considerable attention in 2016 when the Bassolino di Sopra wine received a 100-point rating from Robert Parker’s publication The Wine Advocate.
