Producer Information
Azienda Agricola Arianna Occhipinti is well-regaded, minimal-intervention wine estate based just north of the town of Vittoria, in southern Sicily, producing a range of wines under local (Cerasuolo di Vittoria) and regional (Terre Siciliane IGT) appellations. Owner-winemaker Arianna Occhipinti is well-known as a key proponent of the natural wine movement, and has had a meteoric rise to prominence since her first vintage was released in 2006, when she was still only 24 years old. The estate consists of 22 hectares (54 acres) of vineyards planted to Nero d’Avola and Frappato, and 1.5 hectare (four acres) of Albanello and Zibbibo (Muscat of Alexandria). The vineyards are not all certified organic, but are farmed without pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and chemical or synthetic fertilizers. Occhipinti’s wines, most of which are released under the Terre Siciliane IGT classification, are known for their elegance and relative light body compared with other wines from the area. The flagship wines are the SP68 Bianco and SP68 Rosso, named after the road alongside which the vineyard is situated. The range also includes a Frappato, Nero d’Avola, a Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Passito Nero d’Avola and a Grappa. The winery was constructed in 2012 following the purchase of an old farmhouse with an extra seven hectares of vines. It has allowed Occhipinti to move from fermenting and aging the principal red wines in stainless steel and fibreglass to gravity-fed concrete tanks. Arianna Occhipinti is the niece of Giusto Occhipinti, one of the three founders of the Azienda Agricola COS winery, just eight kilometers (five miles) to the north.
