Producer Information
Domaine Lon Barral is a wine producer situated in the Faugres appellation in Languedoc-Roussillon. Didier Barral founded the domaine in the early 1990s and named it for his grandfather. Today, it produces a portfolio from classic Rhne grape varieties including Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvdre and Cinsaut, as well as white grapes varieties like Terret Blanc and Gris, Viognier and Roussanne. The estate has 25 hectares (61 acres) of biodynamically farmed vineyards planted on schist soils. The vines here vary in age from 30-90 years old and are trained in the goblet style. In the winery, a gravity flow system is employed for the movement of juice and wine to minimise excess oxidation. Once harvested, most of the grapes are destemmed, but some clusters may be kept whole for vinification. The grapes are fermented in cement tanks using natural yeasts. The maceration period lasts for three to four weeks before the grapes are gently pressed in an old wooden basket press. After aging, the wines are bottled without racking, fining or filtration. The domaine’s portfolio includes a traditional red Faugres wine made from multiple vineyard sites, as well as two single-vineyard offerings: Jadis and Valinire. The Lon Barral Faugres is aged in cement and stainless steel tanks for 24 months, while the Jadis and Valinires spend between 24 and 26 months in oak barrels. 10 percent of which are new. Domaine Lon Barral also makes a single white IGP Pays d’Herault wine.
