Description

Red Wine: 1998 | Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils | Les Boudots

Very discreet wood sets off a more elegant and attractively layered nose that offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit as well as anise, clove, underbrush and warm earth that slides into rich, round and velvety flavors that possess real depth as it’s immediately clear that there is another dimension present on the beautifully persistent finish.

Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils is a producer based in the commune of Flagey-Echzeaux in Burgundy’s Cte de Nuits region. The domaine’s small parcel of 80-year-old vines in the grand cru climat of Les Treux in Echzeaux produces its finest Pinot Noir and, since 2010, the company has also added an Aux Argillas wine to its portfolio of mainly village- and regional-level Pinot Noirs. The origins of the domaine date back to 1945, when Victor Tardy established a mtayage agreement with Domaine Mo-Camuzet, which included the appellations of Clos de Vougeot, Vosnes-Romane Premier Cru Les Chaumes and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Boudots. Jean Tardy took over from his father in 1970 and expanded the family domaine with the purchase and rental of plots of land in areas including Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Bourgogne Rouge. In 2003, Guillaume Tardy assumed control and acquired climats in Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin and Bourgogne Hautes Cte de Nuits. The domaine’s mtayage arrangement with Domaine Mo-Camuzet came to a close in 2007 and with it the production of its Clos de Vougeot, Les Chaumes and Les Boudots wines. In the winery, the winemaking process is kept simple with long fermentation times. Barrel-aging occurs for approximately 18 months, the portion of new oak employed depending on the wine with 70 percent sourced for the grand cru. All bottling is done at the domaine.
