Producer Information
Domaine Michel Magnien & Frdric Magnien is a wine producer and ngociant based in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Cte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Michel Magnien estate covers 18 hectares (44 acres) with plots in grand cru, premier cru, village and regional AOC vineyards in the area. The estate is run by Michel’s son, Frdric, who also produces an eponymous ngoce range of wines made from fruit purchased off other growers. Frdric Magnien one of the region’s most respected winemakers joined his father Michel at the domaine in 1993. Until the early 1990s, the domaine only bottled part of its production, selling the rest to ngociants. This changed when Frdric took on production for his father, roughly at the same time as setting up his own ngociant label (often referred to as “Maison Frdric Magnien”) in 1995. By law, the two operations have to have different winemaking facilities, though both are based in Morey-Saint-Denis and are neighboring sites. The domaine vineyards (which have been certified organic since 2008 and biodynamic since 2015) include holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne Romane, plus AOC Bourgogne zones. Highlights include parcels in the Charmes-Chambertin (0.3 hectares/0.7 acres), Clos de la Roche (0.4 hectares/one acre) and Clos-Saint-Denis (0.1 hectares/0.2 acres) Grand Crus. Premier cru holdings (among numerous others) include 0.3 hectares in Gevrey’s Les Cazetiers; 0.7 hectares (1.7 acres) in Les Chaffots and 0.4 hectares (one acre) in Les Millandes (Morey); as well as 0.2 hectares (0.5 acres) in Chambolle’s Les Sentiers. Magnien produces around twenty red wines and a handful of whites. The (Maison) Frdric Magnien ngociant range is even more extensive with around 60 red wines and 20 whites from appellations across Burgundy, although the majority of wines come from Morey itself. Wines are made from bought-in grapes from top sites with an emphasis on Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. Magnien works closely with his growers and is increasing the number of products which are certified organic.
