Producer Information
Chteau Bellegrave is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of the Haut-Mdoc. It makes two red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The property is located in the south of the appellation. Immediate neighbors are Latour, Pichon-Longueville and Lynch-Bages. It was purchased in 1997 by J.P. Meffre, who already owned Chteaux du Glana and Lagrange in Saint-Julien. The family are most obviously associated with Maison Gabriel Meffre in the Rhne family. The 8.75 hectares of vines lie on Garonne gravel. 65 percent is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, 33 percent with Merlot and 2 percent with Cabernet Franc. Around 29,000 bottles of the eponymous grand vin are made each year. Cabenet Sauvignon accounts for 55 to 65 percent of the blend. It is aged for 12 months in barrels; the percentage of new wood can vary with each vintage, but is often around 40 percent. The second wine is Les Sieurs de Bellegrave. The amount of Cabernet Franc in the vineyard ends up in this wine. It also spends 12 months in oak, with 10 percent new barrels. Just under 5,000 bottles are made per year. Buyers should note that there are several properties named Bellegrave in Bordeaux, including one in Pomerol. A number of others are named Belgrave.
