        Producer Information

Niepoort is a historic, family-owned producer of Port and table wines in the Douro Valley, in northern Portugal. It was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1842, and is now known for its distinctively packaged and energetically marketed wines. The Port house owns numerous quintas, or vineyard estates, throughout the Douro valley, although before the 1980s, all grapes were purchased from grower vineyards. Niepoort began acquiring vineyards with the purchase of the Quinta de Npoles estate, in the southern central Cima Corga region in 1987, which has around 30 hectares (75 acres) of vineyards above the Tdo river. This was joined by the neighboring Quinta do Carril in 1988, and a dedicated Port-making facility was made in Vale de Mendiz in 2003. In 2008, Niepoort added a winery for its dry wines to the Quinta de Npoles estate. Once made, the young wines are sent down river to Niepoort’s cellars and warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia in Oporto, the traditional headquarters for the Port trade. It is at these cellars that storage, blending, aging, bottling and distribution take place in cooler conditions. Historically, Niepoort was known for its Colheita ports, but as fashions have changed, emphasis has been placed on the Vintage Port, which is often among the finest from the region. Niepoort’s portfolio covers all styles of Port, including tawny, LBV and white Port, and even makes several versions of some styles with varying emphasis on tradition and modernity. Niepoort also make a range of still table wines, which are led by the elegant yet powerful Batuta and Charme red wines. These are both made from the traditional Portuguese red blend, and are considered to be some of Portugal’s top labels. The Redoma range of red, white and ros wines provide a more accessible level of wines, and Niepoort also partners with producers around the world to make one-off labels in places like Carnuntum, Austria, or Swartland in South Africa.
