Luce 1997 is a firm and distinctive wine, yet refi ned and elegant, showing a striking ruby colour. A rich, variegated nose releases seductive fragrances of raspberry and blackcurrant that dance together with smoother notes of vanilla and clove, bringing to the bouquet notable warmth and length. The tannins are exceptionally fine-grained and velvety, which adds immeasurably to the complexity of this wine.

Despite its position within the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone, the estate is best known for for its Luce wine a combination of Sangiovese and Merlot that, on its debut in 1993, became one of the very first Super Tuscans from the region. The estate is located southwest of Montalcino town and has 77 hectares (190 acres) of estate vineyards in total. The Sangiovese is located in higher, well-drained soils, while the Merlot is planted in more clay-based, sandier soils. Parcels of the two varieties are vinified separately then blended before aging. Lucento, the second wine of Luce, sourced from the same vineyards. Tenuta Luce also makes a Brunello di Montalcino label, which has garnered much critical acclaim, including perfect 100-point ratings from James Suckling for the 2006 and 2010 vintages. It comes from a five-hectare (12.5-acre) portion of the estate, registered under the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG appellation. A fourth wine, Lux Vitis, is produced predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small portion of Sangiovese. The Cabernet portion of the vineyard was planted in 2004. A Grappa, known as Grappa di Luce, is also produced at the estate from Merlot and Sangiovese pomace (marc). It is made in collaboration with Poli Distillerie, a well-known grappa producer in the Veneto As Luce della Vite, Tenuta Luce was founded in the early 1990s as a collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi. Ownership passed entirely to Lamberto Frescobaldi in 2002.
