Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The finest La Gaffelire I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyards sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins.
- James Suckling: This is a vivid and juicy wine with great depth and finesse. Full body, chewy and beautiful. Tight and complex. Still needs time but sexy and beautiful. Stone and chalk. Exciting.
Producer Information
Having settled in Saint-milion in 1705, the Malet Roquefort family of Domaines Comte de Malet Roquefort has a history in Bordeaux spanning more than three centuries. A record of vines being planted on this land in Gallo-Roman times shows an even longer history of viticulture, and was confirmed in 1969 by Comte Lo de Malet Roquefort who discovered ruins of the Gallo-Roman Villa du Palat with mosaics depicting vines plantings. Chteau La Gaffelire, which gained status in 1954 as a Saint-milion Premier Grand Cru Class, is the original estate of the Malet Roquefort family. In 2001, the family united three estates, Chteau La Gaffelire, Chteau Chapelle dAlinor, and Chteau Armens, under a single brand: Domaines Comte de Malet Roquefort. Later, in 2008 Chteau La Connivence also joined the Domaines. Today, the Domaines Comte de Malet Roquefort estates include: Chteau La Gaffelire, Chteau Chapelle dAlinor, Chteau Armens, and Chteau La Connivence. Founded on the four guiding principles of excellence, elegance, authenticity, and independence, the Malet Roqueforts have passed on their traditions, generation after generation, and today Alexandre de Malet Roquefort is at the helm of Domaines Comte de Malet Roquefort. Like his ancestors, he shares a passion for wine and for the Saint-milion terroir which they call home.
