Producer Information
Martinelli Winery is a California producer with a number of vineyards throughout Sonoma County. It is known both for making its own estate wines, and as being a prominent supplier of grapes to other wineries. Martinelli’s flagship variety is Zinfandel, but Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and Muscat of Alexandria are also important in both its own wines and in its role as a grape grower and supplier. The winery and most of its vineyards are located in the Russian River Valley AVA. The Martinelli family has been growing grapes and farming in the valley since the 1880s, as well as growing other crops such as apples and hops. The farm was founded by Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini who emigrated to California from Tuscany. Looking for a place to start a winery, the couple started by planting Zinfandel and Muscat vines without trellising on a steep hill. That decision earned the hill its modern name: Jackass Hill. Now, the Zinfandel from Jackass Hill and Jackass Vineyard produces some of the most recognized Martinelli wines. They are also the only vineyards planted by Giuseppe still in production, and boast vines over 100 years old. Martinelli has a number of wine brands and also releases a range of single-vineyard estate wines. Even though the wine catalog appears extensive, individual wines aren’t necessarily made every vintage, with the vast majority of estate-grown fruit still being sold to other producers up to 90 percent of each harvest. In 2018, the fifth generation of the Martinelli family purchased the 465-acre (188-hectare) Charles Ranch property in the Sonoma Coast AVA. At the time of acquisition, the property included 27 acres (11 hectares) of vineyards including the Three Sisters site and the eponymous Charles Ranch Vineyard.
