Producer Information
Ca’ del Baio is a family-owned winery in the Barbaresco region of Piemonte, northern Italy. It specializes in red wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety. Vines are owned in both the Teiso and Barbaresco municipalities. The estate’s history stretches back one and a half centuries to 1870. Then the great grandfather of current owner Giulio Grasso purchased the Cascina Vallegranda farm in Treiso. In the vineyards, no chemical fertilizers or synthetic herbicides are used. Wines are fermented with native yeasts and sulphur dioxide additions are minimized. The winery operates according to the Green Experience biodiversity and sustainability programme . Five Barbaresco cuves are produced. At the pinnacle is the Asili Riserva, from a southwest facing 2.5 hectare (6.2 acre) section of the famous vineyard in the village of Barbaresco. The 2011 was the first release, launched in 2016. A Cru wine from 0.3ha (0.7 acres) of vines in the nearby Pora vineyard sits alongside the “normale” Asili bottling. The Vallegrande comes from several west facing parcels totalling 3ha in the lesser-known Treiso cru. This serves as the estate’s “home vineyard”. The Barbaresco Autinbej is a combination of fruit from the Marcarini and Ferrerre crus, also in Treiso. The winery also produces a pair of Langhe Nebbiolos. the generic bottling is made from younger vines from various sites. The Bric del Baio bottling is a selection of the youg vines from the best vineyard parcels. A Barbera d’Alba and a Dolcetto d’Alba round out the red wine portfolio. A Riesling, a pair of Chardonnay wines, and a Moscato d’Asti complete the roster.
