Dark purple. Smoky dark berry and cherry compote aromas, with hints of licorice, olive and black pepper. Deeply pitched blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors show very good depth and are lifted by tangy acidity. Dense but not heavy, with very good finishing clarity and spicy cut.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2009 Cornas exhibits a black/purple color along with aromas of blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, espresso roast, forest floor and hints of new saddle leather as well as crushed rocks. This velvety textured, full Cornas can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years.
- Jeb Dunnuck: A serious Cornas that exudes minerality and earthy characteristics, the 2009 Domaine du Tunnel (Stphane Robert) Cornas boasts stunning, pure aromas of blackberry, violets, charred meat, and Asian spice on the nose. Gorgeously put together and showing a perfect blend of fruit, freshness, and structure, this seamless, balanced Cornas needs 2-3 years of bottle age to gain additional complexity, and should have 15+ years of longevity.
Producer Information
In 1994, Stphane ROBERT created the Domaine du Tunnel. It starts with 2.5 ha of vines on the right bank of the Rhne, in Ardche in the Cornas, Saint-Pray and Saint-Joseph appellations. The cellar is in the town center of Saint-Pray. In 2013, the estate expanded its range with an additional AOC: Condrieu. In 2014, Stphane rehabilitated a tunnel in Saint-Pray at a place called Barras to set up a winemaking and aging cellar. At the beginning of the 20th century, this 170m long freestone tunnel was crossed by a steam train linking Valence to Vernoux en Vivarais. The cellar overlooks the Rhne valley with a breathtaking view of the Crussol castle. To date, the wine estate extends over 12 hectares, in the communes of Saint-Pray, Cornas, Glun, Mauves, Tournon sur Rhne and Chavanay. The vintages are vinified mainly from old vines on hillsides or terraces, on granite soils. The grape varieties are Syrah (Cornas and Saint-Joseph), Marsanne and Roussanne (Saint-Pray) and Viognier (Condrieu) The work in the vineyard and the grape harvest is done manually. Stphane raises his wines with passion. He mainly uses barrels of 1 to 3 wines for his Cornas and Saint-Joseph. Depending on the vintages and vintages, he may use new barrels or wooden vats. This diversity of forest allows it to carry out adapted and precise breeding. All production is sold in bottles. The estate’s wines are represented on the most beautiful tables in France and the world. The estate exports 25% of its production (England, USA, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Denmark, Netherlands, etc.)
