Producer Information
Georges Laval is a small grower Champagne in Cumires, a small Premier Cru village in the Marne, a few kilometers to the northwest of pernay. The Laval family have been growing grapes in the village for four generations. George’s son Vincent has been at the helm since 1996. Only around 10,000 bottles are produced each year. These are usually snapped up quickly by devotees of the grower. There are just 2.5 hectares of vineyards. Most lie in the village, split across 7 parcels. There is also a half-hectare (1.2 acres) of Pinot Meunier at Chambrecy, in the Ardre valley in the west of the Montagne de Reims region. Over the years the Lavals have traded parcels when possible, in order to producer larger blocks. This rationalization helps to facilitate organic viticulture. This has been practised since George Laval began bottling estate wines in 1971. The vineyards are certified by Ecocert. Organic compost is used, and all plots have cover crops. These are regularly tilled to oxygenate the soil and allow roots to dig deeper.
