Brunello di Montalcino by Giodo is a powerful, smooth and concentrated wine, characterized by a floral elegance. After a maturation for 24 months in big oak barrels it expresses perfumes of wild-berries, violets and chocolate. The taste is velvety, rich and complex.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Carlo Ferrini’s Giodo 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is plush and softly layered, and the wine has plenty of fiber and cherry to absorb the power that comes naturally to this vintage. This is Carlo’s seventh leaf (or vintage) of Brunello from his family-run estate, and it’s nice to reflect on the consistency of style and quality achieved since this new venture emerged. Giodo has the advantage of coming onto the scene when international regard and understanding for Brunello was highest (think back to the excellent 2010 vintage). Carlo has not disappointed. He brings us a modern, forward-thinking wine that is rooted in local Tuscan winemaking tradition (just think, one of his first stints was at Soldera Case Basse years ago). This vintage brings home that signature Giodo personality with black cherry, dark fruit and elegant earthy end notes. At about 18-years-old now, his vines are entering an interesting chapter of their lifespan, and we can expect more great results from this estate.
- James Suckling: A full-bodied Brunello with lots of plums and cherries, as well as orange-peel character. Its creamy and round-textured. Soft and chewy tannins. Shows the warmth and ripeness of the 2017 vintage.
Producer Information
Podere Giodo is a small wine producer in the Montalcino region of Tuscany. It produces a Brunello di Montalcino and a Rosso Toscano IGP from the Sangiovese grape variety grown here. A further red wine is made from a vineyard on Mount Etna in Sicily. The estate was founded in 2002 by Carlo Ferrini, the celebrated winemaking consultant. The winery lies midway between SantAngelo in Colle and SantAntimo. The estate name derives from those of Ferrinis parents, Giovanna and Donatello. There are six hectares (15 acres) of vineyards. They are sited at around 300 meters altitude (985ft) on pebbly soils with a southeast exposure. Ferrini has selected the eight clones of Sangiovese which have most most impressed him over his career. Grape clusters are hand sorted before the crushed grapes go to the fermenters. These have been custom-made in stainless steel to preserve grape aroma.
