        Producer Information

Jean Foillard is a family estate in the Beaujolais region of France. Popular among fans of natural wines, Foillard wines are also regularly praised by critics in their own right. The domaine is best known for a range of red wines from the Morgon appellation. The wines have a reputation for combining lushness and fresh fruit aromas with depth, complexity and structure, which gives them not only great appeal when young but also considerable aging potential. The wines avoid the bubblegum aromas that can be associated with the Gamay grape and Beaujolais winemaking. Foillard took over the domaine from his father in the 1980s, adding further parcels of land to the estate holdings over the following decades. The organically farmed estate comprises nearly 14 hectares (34 acres), a high proportion of which is on the famed granite-and-schist hillside of Cte de Py. Most plantings are more than 40 years old, with some as old as 100. A Fleurie is also made from a single-hectare parcel, and a Beaujolais Nouveau comes from a four-hectare (10-acre) plot of standard Beaujolais appellation vines. Foillard has a relatively high standing among both fans of natural wines and Beaujolais aficionados. Regularly referred to as something of a disciple of France’s natural wine messiah, Jules Chauvet, Foillard forged a name for his wines alongside other minimal-intervention producers in the area, including Guy Breton, Marcel Lapierre and Jean-Paul Thvenet (collectively, they are sometimes referred to as “the gang of four”). Grapes are generally harvested late and clusters are kept at low temperature for several weeks undergoing traditional semi-carbonic fermentation, with ambient yeasts, minimal or no sulfur additions, and no chaptalization or filtration. Wines are aged in used barrels sourced from estates in Burgundy.
