Acting as a second wine for the producers Pintas, this bottling has a softer aspect at this young stage. It is juicy, with ripe blackberry fruits and good acidity that cuts through the tannins.

• Wine Advocate: The 2019 Pintas Character is a field blend (over 30 grapes, but the majority are Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional) from old vines aged for 18 months in 90% used French oak. As always, the Pintas Character is not quite as powerful or as concentrated as its big brother, Pintas, but this easygoing red has more going on than seems apparent on first pour. Coming back to this after half an hour helped a lot. At that point, it showed off its structure. It features ripe tannins but a firm finish. Then, the fruit also evolved, becoming very expressive. Both approachable and serious, this year’s version of Character should age pretty well. It is drinking decently now, but it can still improve over the next few years. It does need to demonstrate it can do that, but it’s so appealing today that it’s worth leaning up for the moment.

• James Suckling: This has aromas of blackberries, cracked pepper, tobacco and blackcurrant leaves. Chewy and dark-fruited with a full body and firm tannins. Inky quality.

Producer Information

Wine & Soul is a wine producer based in the central Cima Corga region of the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. It produces a range of still red and white wines as well as Port. Wine & Soul was established by winemakers Jorge Serdio Borges and Sandra Tavares da Silva in 2001 with a single vineyard in the Cima Corga’s Pinho Valley, by the town of the same name. Progressively the pair have expanded their vineyard holdings which now include the Quinta da Manoella property and cover around 45 hectares (111 acres). The grapes are grown organically and hand harvesting standard across the wines. The wines are generally fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in French barriques. The range of wines covers red, white and ros still wines (most under the banner of Manoella or Pintas), most of which are produced as field blends of red Douro varieties and white Douro varieties (the exception is the Manoella ros, made predominantly from Touriga Nacional). The Guru and Vinha do Altar whites are also field blends. The port wines cover a range of styles with both red and white ports produced as well as Ruby, 10 year-old Tawny and Reserve bottlings.
